MUMBAI — India’s growing internet TV usage is set to receive a boost on the back of the country’s most popular sporting event, helped by trial period offers from telecom market leader Reliance Jio and shifting consumer habits from legacy satellite and cable television.

Ahead of the popular Indian Premier League (IPL), which kicked off on Saturday, billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s telecom arm offered 50 days worth of free trials of its home internet service, which also comes with free receiver boxes for TVs, to users with a Jio prepaid telecom plan worth 299 rupees ($3.46) or above.
