NAGANO, Japan — The central Japanese city of Nagano is tapping the rich history of its atmospheric Matsushiro district to lure overseas visitors, aiming to give travelers a taste of the past through “deep-dive” guided tours and meals based on the dining habits of a 19th century feudal lord.

Local authorities and businesses are working together to serve up experiences and products drawing inspiration from historical archives and insight from experts, with standout offerings including a modern interpretation of the kind of banquet favored by the ninth lord of the Matsushiro clan, Yukinori Sanada, who inherited his position in 1852.
