TOKYO — Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp. and marine shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha are launching a business to ship carbon dioxide from Japan to the U.S. and store it underground in Alaska, aiming to begin full-scale operations in 2030.

Alaska, the largest state in the U.S. by land area, boasts underground CO2 storage capacity 50 times Japan’s annual emissions. Sumitomo and Kawasaki Kisen will complete an initial investigation into storage capacity and costs there by 2025.
