TOKYO — JFE Engineering is joining hands with a quartet of major restaurant chains in Japan to produce electricity using biogas from food scraps, selling the power generated back to these partners.

The companies joining the food waste-to-energy cycle initiative are Akindo Sushiro, the Food & Life Cos. group unit that runs conveyer-belt sushi chain Sushiro; Royal Holdings, the company behind the Royal Host family-style eateries; Aleph, operator of Bikkuri Donkey hamburger steak restaurants; and Monogatari, which owns the Yakiniku King barbeque chain.
