TOKYO — China’s restricted exports on rare-earth metals are beginning to be felt in auto assembly plants that have halted operations because of parts shortages.

Suzuki Motor last month suspended production of Swift compact cars made at a Japanese plant. A shortage of rare earths delayed supplies of needed components, Nikkei reported. Ford Motor also temporarily halted production of sport utility vehicles at its Chicago plant.
