BANGKOK — Pumped-storage hydropower plants, which generate electricity with pumped water and can help balance the supply of renewable energy, are expanding across Southeast Asia, where the capacity of such plants is expected to increase eightfold by 2033.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) looks to invest 90 billion baht ($2.8 billion) to build three new pumped-storage plants in the country as part of a long-term plan through 2037.
