LONDON — “The idea that what I do in my own home will be under camera surveillance is deeply disturbing,” said Mark Nygate, after attending his fourth protest on Saturday against China’s plan to build a “super embassy” just eight meters from the bound of his garden.

Nygate has lived for 26 years on London’s Cartwright Street, which is adjacent to the site. He recalled that during a recent public inquiry, an embassy official advised residents concerned about privacy to pull down their blinds. He fears the plan could bring protests and security threats that would compromise the neighborhood’s safety.
