This adaptation of “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. Directed by “Crazy Rich Asians” filmmaker Jon M. Chu, the film serves as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” and brings back some of its iconic characters.
“Wicked” follows Elphaba’s origin story as she transforms from being treated as an anomaly to becoming known as the Wicked Witch of the West. According to the film’s official synopsis, “Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forms an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student determined to achieve popularity.”
The film was announced as the first part of a two-part series. After earning $520 million at the worldwide box office and becoming one of this year’s blockbuster releases, anticipation for the follow-up film has surged.
Universal Pictures has officially announced that the second film, titled “Wicked: For Good”, will be released in theaters on November 21, 2025. In addition to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the star-studded cast features Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Ethan Slater, and others.
Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the 2003 “Wicked” Broadway musical, also make special cameos in the latest film.
