BEIJING — A gathering of senior officials from Japan’s and China’s ruling parties convened for the first time in six years here Tuesday, as incoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade pressure threatens to cause headaches for both sides.

The Japan-China Ruling Party Exchange Council brought members of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party and coalition partner Komeito together with Communist Party officials.
