Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged $1 million toward relief efforts for the devastating Los Angeles wildfires following backlash labeling him a “hypocrite.”
On Janu 15, the Titanic star announced the donation via Instagram Stories, stating, “The Los Angeles wildfires are devastating our city. I am committing $1 million in partnership with @rewild’s Rapid Response Program to support both urgent needs and post-fire recovery efforts.”
DiCaprio detailed that the funds will aid multiple organizations, including the LA Fire Department Foundation, California Fire Foundation, World Central Kitchen, California Community Foundation, Pasadena Humane Society, and SoCal Fire Fund. These groups, he said, are “on the frontlines providing much-needed resources to our first responders and firefighters, and the people, animals and communities who need it most.”
The donation comes amid public criticism of DiCaprio, 50, for leaving Los Angeles during the wildfire crisis. He and girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti were spotted in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last Friday, sparking outrage.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) called him a “hypocrite,” while another wrote, “The ‘climate warriors’ don’t give a damn about the real climate. They’re all frauds.”
The actor, who grew up in Los Angeles, has often championed environmental causes. The fires, which began on Janu 7, are among the most destructive in the city’s history.
