Marvel Snap and TikTok banned in the US
Hours after TikTok was banned in the United States, the popular mobile game Marvel Snap faced the same fate. Both platforms were banned under the “Protecting Americans From Foreign Advers Controlled Applications Act” a law aimed at restricting applications developed or managed by foreign companies in the US.
Marvel Snap, developed by California-based Second Dinner and published by Nuverse, a subsidi of ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company), is no longer accessible to US players. Upon attempting to access the app, US users are met with a message indicating that the game is temporarily unavailable.
The ban extended beyond TikTok and Marvel Snap to at least 10 other ByteDance-owned applications, which were also removed from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in the US.
Second Dinner wrote in a post on X, “Unfortunately, MARVEL SNAP is temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores and is unavailable to play in the U.S.”
“In a surprise to Second Dinner and our publisher Nuverse, MARVEL SNAP was affected by the takedown of TikTok late on Saturday, Janu 18th. MARVEL SNAP isn’t going anywhere. We’re actively working on getting the game up as soon as possible and will update you once we have more to share,” the developer added.
Originally released in October 2022, Marvel Snap is celebrated as “The fastest card battler in the Multiverse is here! Assemble your Marvel dream team from a super roster of your favorite heroes and villains — then make your move. MARVEL SNAP unleashes the entire Marvel Universe into a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping, strategic card battler.”
Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump stated his intention to grant TikTok a 90-day reprieve once he assumes office on Monday, a promise TikTok highlighted in a notice to its US users.
