BANGKOK — Gone are the days when Thai Airways flight crews waltzed through Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport in purple suits before changing into traditional silk dresses upon boarding. Now, they don only one outfit, a sustainability initiative that also doubled as a cost-cutting measure.
Getting rid of the outfit change was the most visible reform at Thai Airways during its five-year rehabilitation from bankruptcy. Behind the scenes, the workforce is leaner by nearly half, its fleet is 23% smaller, and decisions are made more efficiently by professional managers, its top executives told Nikkei Asia.
