OIC-IPHRC condemns over rising Islamophobia, targeted attacks against Muslims in India

The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a strong condemnation of the rise in Islamophobia, hate speech, and targeted attacks against Muslims in India and Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IOJK) following the Pahalgam incident.

The Commission denounced the unprovoked violence, particularly by far-right Hindu nationalist groups scapegoating Muslims, and called for a prompt, impartial international investigation to ensure justice and protect civilians.

Citing India’s obligations under international human rights treaties such as the ICCPR, ICESCR, and ICERD, the IPHRC urged the Indian government to end the cycle of hate, ensure the safety of Muslim communities, and hold perpetrators accountable.

The statement also rejected India’s post-August 5, 2019 actions in IOJK, including demographic changes and political repression, and called on international bodies like the UN to monitor the situation closely.

The Commission demanded the restoration of fundamental freedoms in IOJK, the release of political prisoners, access for UN and OIC observers, and the holding of a free and fair referendum in line with relevant UN and OIC resolutions.
