TOKYO — Japan is exploring support for President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense shield following a telephone conversation between the U.S. leader and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba last month.
Trump’s $175 billion plan is based on Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system. In an attempt to protect the U.S. from attacks on its mainland, space-based equipment would detect and intercept missiles. The country’s existing missile defense network would be updated and combined with next-generation technology.
