- False reports are circulating on social media that another TikTok couple had also been shot dead.
- These false claims have been proven false, and both Mashal and Meena Khan are alive and well.
- The sensitive timing of the false report and the emotional public response led to an investigation by fact-checkers.
In the wake of the tragic murder of 17-year-old TikToker Sana Yousuf in Islamabad, false reports began circulating on social media claiming that another TikTok couple, Mashal Khan and Meena Khan from Peshawar, had also been shot dead. The misleading posts gained traction on Monday, with users alleging that the couple had met the same fate as Sana.
However, these claims have been proven false; Mashal and Meena Khan are both alive and well. A post on platform X falsely stated that the couple had been killed, adding to the public anxiety already heightened by the confirmed murder of Sana Yousuf, who was shot in the chest at her home by an intruder.
Due to the sensitive timing of the false report and the emotional public response following Sana’s murder, fact-checkers quickly launched an investigation. The claim was thoroughly reviewed and debunked by “iVerify Pakistan”, a project of CEJ-IBA in partnership with UNDP.
As misinformation continues to spread rapidly online, especially during emotionally charged events, experts urge users to verify news before sharing. Misinformation not only causes panic but can also interfere with real investigations and grief processes.
