BENGALURU — Indian automakers are feeling the pressure from Beijing’s curbs on the export of rare earth minerals and magnets, with production halts set to come “very soon” if shortages persist. That would be particularly unfortunate timing for automakers already wrestling with slowing sales.
Rare earths are crucial for carmakers, as they are used in a host of systems ranging from electric seats, steering and brakes to wipers and audio systems. They are also widely used in engines for gasoline cars and motors of electric vehicles because of their tolerance for high temperatures.
