KARACHI: As Eid ul-Azha approaches, the Northern Bypass Cattle-Friendly Market is witnessing a sharp decline in animal presence, with nearly 80% of the livestock already sold.

According to Administrator Faisal Ali, around 80,000 to 85,000 sacrificial animals are currently present in various blocks of the market, with more than half already tokened and reserved by buyers many of whom traditionally make last-day purchases.

Currently, only 20% of animals remain available for sale. Since Thursday morning, there has been a surge in bargaining between sellers and buyers.

The prices of animals have dropped significantly, with average rates per animal falling between PKR 70,000 to 80,000. A 3.5-maund (approximately 140 kg) animal was recently sold for PKR 210,000.

Since becoming operational on April 19, the Cattle-Friendly Market at Northern Bypass has seen traders begin their return journeys

More than 250,000 sacrificial animals—including camels, bulls, calves, heifers, goats, and sheep—were brought in from across Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and various parts of Sindh.

Over 150,000 animals have already been sold.

Faisal Ali added that more than 19,000 trucks and trailers have entered the market through the marshalling area. However, animal arrivals from other livestock markets in Karachi to Northern Bypass are still ongoing.

The administrator also revealed that compared to last year, the market has received over 50,000 additional animals this year marking a significant increase in supply.
