Pakistan to assume UN Security Council presidency in July

NEW YORK: Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in July 2025.

Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July 2025. This will be during Pakistan’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, which began on Janu 1, 2025.

In this regard, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed met with UN Secret-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York.

During the meeting, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar briefed the Secret-General on Pakistan’s proposed Programme of Work for the month of July in detail.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan would conduct its presidency in an open, transparent, and consultative manner, in line with its commitment to multilateral diplomacy.

António Guterres and Asim Iftikhar discussed the important and urgent global peace and security issues on the Security Council agenda.

It also discussed the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, the progress made in Africa, Europe, Asia and Latin America and their role in promoting the Security Council’s goals through UN peace missions.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that there was a strong commitment among the member states to promote global peace and security through peaceful resolution of the UN Charter’s goals and principles.

Ambassador Asim highlighted the importance of collective efforts to tackle complex global challenges and reaffirmed the Secret -General’s efforts to prevent multilateral diplomacy and conflict.
