The ongoing dispute between K-Electric (KE) and Pakistan Railways over unpaid bills has caused major disruptions to the railway system.

The power outage has led to significant operational setbacks, including the shutdown of Karachi’s railway booking system. Nasir Khalili, the Deputy Superintendent of Pakistan Railways, stated that the electricity cut has caused the collapse of the online booking system and the automatic signaling system, both crucial for smooth operations.

Khalili mentioned that K-Electric has been issued a notice to clear its outstanding dues, with a warning that Pakistan Railways will withhold payments to K-Electric if the dues are not cleared. He also pointed out that passengers would be adversely affected due to the power cuts.

In response, a spokesperson for K-Electric emphasized that continuing the power supply to Pakistan Railways is not possible without payment. K-Electric claims Pakistan Railways owes over Rs 430 million for 31 connections and demands immediate payment to restore power. The spokesperson also mentioned that multiple reminders had been sent to railway officials before the disconnection.

This situation has caused further service disruptions, raising concerns for passengers who rely on the railway network.

A similar incident occurred in August 2024 when K-Electric disconnected power to Pakistan Railways offices over unpaid dues. At that time, the power was cut to the City Railway Station and Railways colonies due to over Rs 200 million in unpaid bills, affecting the booking office and engine loco shed.
