PAMPORE, India — Kashmiri saffron farmer Abdul Majeed Wani should be a happy man, as prices for the “world’s most expensive spice” are up this year and production is down in top-grower Iran.
But all is not well in Kashmir’s purple saffron fields these days, despite a reputation for quality that the north Indian region earned with a prestigious graphical Indication (GI) tag several years ago.
